Our Core Programs

Liberi offers rigorous and creative curriculum designed to get students thinking about real world questions, develop 21st century skills, and prepare them to innovate a future of their dreams. Our project-based online programs liberate students to think globally and to learn from anywhere. All courses balance synchronous sessions with asynchronous project work. Led by passionate, experienced teachers, our virtual learning environments provide a supportive community, world-class instruction, a global perspective, and opportunities for collaboration and presentation.

Liberi’s core curriculum comprises mathematics, language arts, writer’s workshop, history, and science. Our academic calendar is divided into three terms: Fall Term (September-December), Winter Term (January-March), and Spring Term (March-June).

Our programs are ideal for homeschooling and worldschooling families, learning pods, micro schools, as well as families looking to enrich their school’s distance and hybrid learning programs.

We are thrilled to announce our exciting initial learning opportunities and will continue to add more offerings throughout the school year.

MATHEMATICS

Grades 2-4

Students will learn to see mathematicians in everything. They will acquire a deep understanding of mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills. The goal is for them to master fundamental concepts and develop computational fluency—efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility—in their mathematical thinking.

Grades 5-7

Mathematics is a combination of knowledge and thinking abilities. Students will learn the skills needed to succeed in an academic setting while being challenged to think logically and critically for success as mathematical thinkers in practical settings. Students will explore real world problems and data that relate to our science and history curriculum and, through that exploration, understand the math behind them.

Class Structure:

  • Daily 50 min. Zoom sessions

  • Regular office hours/one-on-one conferencing as needed to support learning

  • Approximately 10-30 min. pre-work per day depending on grade level

language and Literary arts

Grades 2-4

Literacy is taught as a lifelong pursuit. Students participate in a balanced reading program, which comprises activities such as guided reading, independent and partner reading, read aloud, spelling, grammar, phonics, vocabulary building, literature discussion circles, and literary analysis.

For Spring Term, students will select a new genre for our book club. Students come prepared with questions and vocabulary words and lead an in-depth discussion with peers about what they have read. We will also prepare a reader’s theatre performance and explore other genres through short dialogic reading experiences.

Grades 5-7

We will be reading fiction, nonfiction, and poetic works from classic and contemporary authors of diverse nationalities, backgrounds, races, and genders. Our goal will be to examine how these myriad writers experience their worlds, compare those experiences to our own, and ultimately come to a better understanding of ourselves and those around us, becoming more empathetic, observant, critical, and just people in the process.

For Spring Term, we will be experimenting with literary science fiction by authors such as Margaret Atwood, Ted Chaing, and H. G. Wells and both compare them to their historical contexts and analyze how they influence or compare to the futures they describe or, sometimes, foretell.

Class Structure:

  • Two 50 min. Zoom sessions per week

  • Regular office hours/one-on-one conferencing as needed to support learning

Writer’s workshop

Grades 2-4

Every child is a writer. Students are encouraged to write with originality and passion. Using illustration and invented spelling, children will learn to connect language to their inner vision and voices. They engage in the entire writing process from original idea, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Genres include personal narrative, poetry, non-fiction research, and fiction.

This Spring, the play’s the thing! We will be trying our hand at writing original short plays, to be performed in a festival of New Works by Liberi students! We’ll learn how to create characters, determine objectives, and tell a story using dialogue and action.

In the second half of Spring Term, we will dive into creative fiction, writing stories from our imaginations. We will think about the genres we’ve already studied this year and determine what new stories we’re ready to tell.

Grades 5-7

In this writing workshop, students will be encouraged to take risks and write with originality and passion. We will hone language and technique to express our vision and voices with impact. We will engage in the entire writing process from original idea, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We will share our work with peers. Genres include personal narrative, poetry, non-fiction research, persuasive essays, and fiction.

For the first half of Spring Term, we will write original short plays, to be performed in a festival of New Works by Liberi students! We’ll focus on the traditional aspects of playwriting, specifically telling stories meant to be watched, rather than read, and how that changes the author’s creative process.

For the second half of Spring Term, as we close out the year, we will traverse into unknown lands as we use Dungeons and Dragons as a means by which to learn how to co-author a high fantasy fiction narrative. We will split time between playing the game and using the adventure we’ve acted out to write a tale to be told by bards all across continents and ages!

Class Structure:

  • Three 50 min. Zoom sessions per week

  • Regular office hours/one-on-one conferencing as needed to support learning

  • Approximately 10-30 min. pre-work per day depending on grade level

scientific inquiry

Grades 2-4

We strive to understand science as it impacts the world and human lives. In the process, students learn how to think like scientists. They apply this methodology to each discipline and are challenged to question the limits of our current body of knowledge. This Spring Term, we will focus on life! We’ll explore taxonomy and learn to classify the living things around us using the categorical process that scientists use in the field. Studying and making field guides to the natural world, we will also imagine what living things may remain undiscovered, creating some unique, original organisms of our own!

Grades 5-7

Rather than formulating our science curriculum around divisions of the sciences, we have created an inquiry-based program in which students will delve into real-world topics such as climate change, public health, and technological inventions to understand the science and human impact that informs these issues. By researching, theorizing, and experimenting themselves, students will learn to study and act like true scientists.

For the first half of Spring Term, we’ll be learning about the basics of psychology, looking into the mind from the vantage point of the fundamental schools that shape the way contemporary psychological theories explain the neurological goings-on in the mind, asking the question: what defines a human being?

For the second half of the Spring Term, we’ll be taking to the woods to learn about the basics of mycology: the study of mushrooms! Our focus will be on the basics of identification, their modes of reproduction, and their environmental roles.

Historical inquiry

Grades 2-4

We strive to uncover the truth behind history and understand how it impacts the world and human lives. In the process, students learn how to think like historians. This Spring Term, we’re going into business! Students will explore entrepreneurship and recognize just how much goes into running a business in a global market. We’ll explore the ideas through a global lens as we research, design, and roleplay our way through running a mock business.

Grades 5-7

The goal of our historical inquiry curriculum is to provide students with a multifaceted understanding of their local, national, and world communities through varied perspectives on historical and contemporary events to better prepare them for their future as active participants in them.

In the Spring Term, we will focus on LGBTQ+ history and issues, looking at and analyzing important people, movements, and events in the struggle for equal rights and treatment in society that is ongoing to this very day.
